command line tricks

mmm.. saw this some time back, finally found it again. [ netkill.com ]
Creating a ghost image with ssh file transfer
1) Unmount the partition to be ghosted.
2) Create the image
dd if/dev/partition_name | gzip | ssh username@backupserver dd of=name_of_backup
3) Restore the image
dd if=name_of_backup | gzip -d | ssh username@client dd of=/dev/partition_name

Serious Broadband, Seriously Cool

CityLink – Serious Broadband [ citylink.co.nz ]
Originally a project by the Wellington City Council, I like their concept of selling standalone Layer 2 services and running easy-to-reach exchanges to encourage service providers no matter how small to peer. Does seem like a decent alternative to pushing traffic through the usual transit providers.
